Conflict in the Community Course


A course to help address conflict in the community was held at The Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, Castlebar on the 14th and 15th February . Glencree have been working in the field of peacebuilidng and reconciliation for thirty years.

The course provides a parallel approach to help people work creatively with conflict situations and develop some confidence to manage conflict more productively. The course covers many areas such as:

»Personal responses to conflict situations
»Styles of conflict management
»Strategies for dealing with conflict
»Transforming conflict in the workplace
»Conflict management vs conflict resolution
»Reflection on personal experiences
»Communication skills and conflict management

This Community Health, Fitness and Nutrition programme was run by a very active local committee in Inver and funded by Iorras Le Chéile from a grant received from Mayo VEC under the Spidas Scheme.



COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE



A Public information evening examining the effects of alcohol abuse on families was held in November 2006. It was facilitated by Dr Michael Hardiman, psychologist and Author of 'Children Under the Influence'. This training Programme for Parents on the affects of drugs and alcohol was run in conjunction with HSE Addiction Services.

Workshops on the affects of drugs and alcohol were run again in conjunction with HSE Addiction Services and the Regional Drugs Task Force in the three second level schools in the Erris area. 150 students took part in small groups. Iorras Le Chéile also carried out a survey with the students regarding their attitudes and experiences to drugs and alcohol and decision making. Information has been submitted to the Regional Drugs Task Force for compilation.
