Positive Mental Health

Positive Mental Health

Iorras Le Chéile recognises that poor mental health is one of the major causes of people not being able to participate fully in their community. It also inhibits the quality of their lives.

We have three main aims:

» To promote positive mental health in the area and create a community response to compliment the existing medical and primary care teams.

» To identify any gaps in the services available and create initiatives to fill these gaps.

» To endeavor to get rid of the stigma attached to mental health.

We are currently running a number of key initiatives in a bid to address mental health issues within the community of Erris.

Suicide Prevention Training for Young People 2013

In autumn 2013 Iorras Le Cheile will facilitate a suicide prevention programme targeting young people aged between the ages of 16 and 25 years. The training will provide young people with the skills necessary to care for their own mental health and to offer assistance to their peers. The training will be delivered to young people in schools and clubs, with approximately 40 young people to be trained in total.

Through delivery of this training we can cultivate a community free from stigma and ignorance, with a deeper understating and knowledge. Working with the younger population allows us to create a foundation for mental health awareness and enhances the opportunity for young people to be open and honest about their feelings, both with themselves and each other. The need for this training was identified through our Anti-Bullying Strategy, as part of research carried of by Dr. Stephen Minton. It was found that young people are more likely to confide in a friend in relation to their mental health. This training will equip young people to assist friends and empower them through increased awareness; it will also enhance their confidence in their role as a friend and confidant.
Confirmation on the details for this training will be posted in the new academic year.
